....................Rehumanator |v.1.3
Seth Grossman 2003©
"And then, all of a sudden, there it was, clear as day: existence had
suddenly unveiled itself. It had lost the harmless look of an abstract category:
it was the very paste of things... the diversity of things, their individuality,
was only an appearance, a veneer. This veneer had melted, leaving soft, monstrous
masses all in disorder -- naked, in a frightful, obscene nakedness".
Nausea/ Sartre

ABSTRACT |
The Rehumanator is a Net-Centric
application that can collect facial images, dissect them and randomly reconnect
them in some modern Frankenstein fashion, much like a police sketch or a children's
game that puts different parts together to form a whole. The purpose of this
is to foster a global forum that touches on issues of identity, race, culture
and gender roles by mixing them in a virtual blender that constantly forms
new images in random patterns. As an introductory visual tool, scanned images
of the users faces maybe from various sources like video cameras, web cameras,
scanners and digital cameras, are used to celebrate and highlight all our
differences. The Rehumantor takes the concept of the photo identification
of an individual and metamorphisizes it into a constant regeneration of images
that creates a collective human image that always changes before a label can
be attached to the image. This catches people's attention and on a surface
level, makes the point that race; gender, age, etc. are not impermeable barriers
that justify prejudice, bias and injustice.
